Ginrei Masking

The next $40 tier drawing I needed to do was someone tired adjusting/taking off the mask to their Ginrei bodysuit!

Chapter 45 production update: I finally got a mostly OK’d outline done albeit I need to tweak the ending some. It’s been pretty rough with trying to figure out which direction it was gonna go but I think I managed to come up with something fun. But because it took so long to figure out I am gonna have to extend the break by another week so as to give me time to write the chapter, have Cooper look over it and give feedback, and then get at least a few weeks worth of storyboards done. To give a sneak peek on what to expect in the next chapter Madison’s gonna be coming back! Been a few years since her last appearance so I’ve wanted to get her back into the comic proper!

In other news I have obtained the bluray for the Scott Pilgrim anime and have watched it. First thing first: the subtitle track was English SDH based off the English audio. So while the Japanese language track is there you don’t get subtitles based on what’s being said in the Japanese dub. There’s a few moments where it’s really obvious that there’s a difference, such as seeing text come onto the screen despite the fact no characters are talking at the moment. Really annoying!

Especially because the English audio is very dull and lifeless. There was a lot of emotion displayed on screen via the animation and the Japanese voice actors would bring out those emotions, but then you switch to the English track and it comes across as someone is sitting there reading a script trying to stay within the timing of the mouth flaps, which results in some weird delivery. Did not care for it. Like, cool, you got all the actors from the original film back. They’re all VERY good at what they do! But voice acting, especially foreign language dubbing voice acting, is a different art form. When they first announced it I assumed they would go the route of doing the recording for the English audio and animate around that but it seemed to be the opposite? Like they went the usual anime production method of doing the animation first.

Overall as a package I found the show kinda meh. While there were emotional beats and character moments that I particularly liked, such as the Ramona and Roxie’s history and them talking post fight and the scene with Gideon/Gordon and Lucas wrecking Julie’s house. But the story fell flat to me. The driving force for the plot felt lame, a lot of the jokes that were reused from the comics/movie were worse versions of those jokes, and the ending felt dissatisfying. As someone who liked the comics and movie I felt disappointed.

The look and the animation was very nice. Props to Science Saru.

In other news I’ve printed episodes of Chapter 3 of Kat! In one long label roll! It’s cool and the colors are nice but also it’s very stupid! Gonna try to rig something up to make it easy to read and display it at an art show the club I’m in is holding near the end of May. More news on that when that gets closer for those who happen to be in the Dallas/DFW area and want to see my stupid print job.

Alrighty, I’ll see y’all next week with, uh, something! Laters!
